Every candle range needs one scent that people come back for again and again, and in our home fragrance collection, that scent is Amber Flame. It is the candle we get asked about the most, the one that sells out fastest when the nights start drawing in, and honestly, it is one we are quietly proud of. Here is an honest look at what makes it different, and a few things worth knowing before you buy.

What does Amber Flame actually smell like?

Amber Flame is a warm, boozy blend of amber, honey, bourbon and oak. Think of the smell of a good whisky bar on a cold evening, or the last log on an open fire, rather than anything sweet or floral. It is not a subtle, in-the-background candle. It is designed to properly fill a room, which is exactly why it has become one of our best sellers through autumn and winter.

If you tend to prefer lighter, fresher scents like linen or citrus, this probably is not the candle for you, and that is fine, we would rather tell you that upfront than have it sit unused on a shelf. But if you like a rich, cosy, slightly indulgent scent that makes a room feel warmer the moment you light it, this is worth trying.

Why we use a rapeseed wax blend, not paraffin

Amber Flame is made using a premium rapeseed wax blend, derived from renewable European rapeseed oil, rather than a paraffin base. In plain terms, that means it burns cleaner, with less black soot on the jar, and it is vegan-friendly and palm-free. Rapeseed and soy-style wax blends generally have a slightly softer cold throw (the scent you notice before lighting) compared with paraffin, but a genuinely excellent hot throw once burning, which is the trade-off we are happy to make for a cleaner burn.

The difference a triple wick makes

The 413g version of Amber Flame uses a triple cotton wick, while the smaller 140g size uses a single wick. The triple wick creates a wider, more even melt pool across the whole surface of the candle, which does two things: it releases more fragrance into the room, and it helps use up the wax evenly so you are not left with a candle that has tunnelled down the middle with wax stuck uselessly to the sides. With an average burn time of 45 to 55 hours on the larger size, it is built to be lit regularly rather than saved for best.

An honest trade-off: strength versus subtlety

We formulate our candles with maximum inclusion levels of scent, meaning we use as much fragrance oil as the wax can hold while still burning safely and cleanly. That is genuinely part of what people love about Amber Flame, but it does mean it is a strong candle. In a small room with the door shut, one candle burning for an hour or two is usually plenty. It is not a candle you need to light three of at once, and doing so in a smaller space can be a bit much. Used sensibly, that same strength is what gives it real presence in open-plan living rooms, hallways and kitchens.

Getting the best burn from your Amber Flame candle

• On the first burn, let the wax melt pool reach the full edges of the jar before blowing it out. This "curing" step helps prevent tunnelling on every burn after.
• Trim the wick to around 5mm before every light. A wick that is too long causes a bigger, sootier flame and burns through fragrance oil faster than it should.
• Keep burns to roughly 2 to 4 hours at a time. Longer than that and you risk the flame overheating the glass vessel.
• Store away from direct sunlight and drafts, both of which can affect scent throw and how evenly the candle burns.
