Getting the best burn

A candle is only as good as the way it is burned. A few simple habits make a big difference to scent throw and burn time:

• Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn. This keeps the flame steady and reduces smoke and soot.
• Let the wax melt right to the edges on the first burn. This prevents tunnelling, where the candle burns a hole down the middle and wastes wax around the sides.
• Do not burn it for more than 3 hours at a time. Longer burns can make the wick too long and the tin too hot.
• Keep it away from draughts. A flickering flame burns unevenly and can blacken the tin.
