How to Make Your Wax Melts Last Longer and Smell Stronger: 9 Practical Tips

Wax melts are one of the most affordable, flexible ways to fragrance your home. But if you have ever found that a melt fades faster than you expected, or never seems to fill the room, you are not alone. The good news is that small changes in how you use them can make a big difference. Here are our nine most useful tips.

1. Use the right amount for the room

More is not always better. Our 50g wax melt bars come with 6 easy-to-snap segments so you can control the strength. As a guide:

  • Small rooms such as bathrooms or box rooms: one segment.
  • Average rooms like bedrooms: one or two segments.
  • Larger or open-plan rooms: two or three segments.

Overfilling the burner dish can actually reduce scent throw, because the wax takes longer to melt fully and can overflow.

2. Choose your burner wisely

Both types have pros and cons:

  • Tealight burners heat quickly and give a strong throw, but they can run hot and scorch the wax, which burns off fragrance faster.
  • Electric burners heat more gently and evenly, which usually means a more consistent scent for longer.

If you use wax melts every day, an electric burner tends to be the better long-term choice.

3. Do not overheat the wax

Fragrance oils are released by warmth, not by boiling. If your wax is bubbling, smoking or turning darker, it is too hot, and you are burning off the scent rather than enjoying it. With tealight burners, make sure there is enough distance between the flame and the dish, and use a standard tealight rather than a long-burning maxi one.

4. Use it in sessions, not all day

Just like your nose stops noticing a perfume, it stops noticing home fragrance too. Running a wax melt continuously all day means you use up the fragrance while you cannot even smell it. Melt for a few hours, switch off, and come back to it later. You will notice the scent more and the wax will last longer.

5. Keep it away from draughts

Open windows, fans and doors that are constantly opening can carry scent away quickly. A spot with gentle air movement, such as near a doorway but not in a direct draught, helps scent travel without dissipating too fast.

6. Close the door

If you want a room to smell beautiful before guests arrive or before bed, closing the door while the wax melts lets the fragrance build up. Open it again once the room smells how you want it to.

7. Know when to change the wax

Wax melts do not run out in the way candles do. The wax stays, but the fragrance is gradually released. When you no longer smell anything once the wax is fully melted, it is time to replace it. Our bars give up to 50 to 60 hours of total fragrance across all six segments. Topping up old, scentless wax with a fresh segment will dilute the new scent, so it is best to start fresh.

8. Remove old wax the easy way

  • Freezer trick: pop the dish in the freezer for 10 minutes once the wax has set, and it usually pops straight out.
  • Warm and wipe: melt it briefly, then soak it up with a cotton pad or kitchen roll.
  • Cupcake liners: line the dish with a silicone or foil liner before melting for easy removal.

Never pour melted wax down the sink, as it can block drains.

9. Store your melts properly

Fragrance is precious stuff. Keep unused melts in their packaging or an airtight container, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. This stops the fragrance from slowly escaping before you even use it.

A quick note on safety

Never leave a burner unattended, keep it on a stable, heat-proof surface and out of reach of children and pets. Do not move a burner while the wax is melted. Wax melts are not edible, however delicious some of them smell, so keep them stored away from little ones.

The honest bit

Even with all of these tips, some scents naturally throw stronger than others. Fresh citrus and light florals tend to be more delicate, while gourmand and woody scents usually feel bolder. That is not a quality issue, it is just how different fragrance notes behave. Room size matters too: a single bar will not fill a large open-plan space the way it fills a bedroom.
