How to Refill a Reed Diffuser Properly (and When to Change the Reeds)
Share
When a reed diffuser runs low, most people do one of two things: throw the whole thing away, or pour more oil in and hope for the best. Neither is ideal. Refilling a reed diffuser properly is easy, saves money and cuts down on waste, as long as you know a few simple tricks. Here is everything you need to know.
Why refill rather than replace?
- It is cheaper. A refill costs less than a brand new diffuser, and larger refills can top up a bottle several times.
- It is less wasteful. You keep using the glass bottle you already have rather than adding another to the recycling.
- You keep the look you like. If your diffuser bottle suits the room, there is no reason to change it.
We offer diffuser refills across many of our scents, including larger 500ml refills for our premium range, so you can keep your favourite going for months.
How to tell when it needs refilling
It is not always obvious. Signs your diffuser needs attention include:
- The liquid is down to the last centimetre or so.
- The scent has faded noticeably, even after flipping the reeds.
- The reeds look dark, dry or dusty at the tips.
Remember that your nose gets used to a scent over time, so a fading diffuser is not always a sign it is empty. Check the level first.
Step by step: refilling your diffuser
- 1. Remove the reeds and set them on a piece of kitchen roll or an old plate. The oil can mark surfaces, so protect the area.
- 2. Check what is left. If you are refilling with the same scent, you can simply top up. If you are switching scents, empty and clean the bottle first (see below).
- 3. Pour carefully. Use a steady hand, or a small funnel if the neck is narrow. Fill to roughly the same level as when the diffuser was new. Overfilling can cause it to spill when you add the reeds.
- 4. Add reeds. Ideally fresh ones. More on that below.
- 5. Wait 24 hours, then flip. Give the reeds time to soak up the fragrance, then turn them over so the saturated ends are at the top.
Should you change the reeds?
Usually, yes. Over time, reeds collect dust and become clogged with fragrance oil, which reduces how well they draw the scent up. If they have been in use for a few months, replacing them gives the refill a fresh start and noticeably better scent throw.
If you are changing to a different scent, always use new reeds. Old reeds hold on to the previous fragrance and will muddy the new one.
How to switch scents cleanly
- Pour away any remaining oil responsibly. Do not pour it down the sink. Soak it up with kitchen roll and put it in general waste.
- Wash the bottle with warm, soapy water and rinse well.
- Let it dry completely. Any water left inside will not mix with diffuser oil and can affect performance.
- Add your new refill and fresh reeds.
Tips for a longer-lasting refill
- Use fewer reeds if you want the oil to last longer and the scent to be softer.
- Keep it away from heat and sunlight. Radiators, sunny windowsills and hot rooms speed up evaporation.
- Do not flip the reeds too often. Once a week is plenty. More frequent flipping uses up the oil faster.
- Keep the lid on refills when you are not using them, and store them somewhere cool and upright.
Safety
Diffuser oil is not for skin or consumption. Keep bottles and refills out of reach of children and pets, wipe up any spills straight away and wash your hands after handling reeds. Diffuser oil can damage painted, varnished and plastic surfaces, so always stand your diffuser on a coaster or a heat-proof, wipeable surface.
The honest bit
Refills are brilliant value, but they are only as good as the reeds you put in them. Topping up an old bottle with clogged, dusty reeds will give you disappointing results, and it is easy to blame the fragrance rather than the reeds. A fresh set every refill or two makes a real difference. And while you can technically mix the last of one scent with a new one, the result is unpredictable, so we always recommend a clean start.
