Refreshing Rhubarb Soap Sponge: A Tangy, Toffee-Sweet Treat for Your Shower
Share
Some scents are polite. Refreshing Rhubarb is not. It is tangy, bright and just a little bit cheeky, the sort of smell that wakes you up before the coffee has had a chance. If you have never tried a soap sponge before, or you are hunting for a fruity shower scent that is not the usual berry or coconut, this one is worth a proper look.
It is one of our handmade soap sponges, made by hand in the UK by our family-run team in Glossop. Here is an honest guide to what it smells like, how it behaves in the shower, and who it is (and is not) for.
What does Refreshing Rhubarb smell like?
The scent is built from rhubarb, pear, apple, toffee and lemon. Rhubarb sits at the front: sharp, slightly tart and green-fruity. Pear and apple soften it into something juicier and rounder, while lemon keeps the whole thing lively. The toffee note is the quiet surprise. It adds a gentle, sweet warmth underneath, so the scent never feels sour or thin.
The result is bright, fruity and a little bit nostalgic. If you grew up with rhubarb crumble, stewed fruit with custard or a sweet shop jar of rhubarb and custard, you will probably recognise the feeling, even if the exact smell is new. It is not a heavy, sugary scent. It is more crisp and cheerful, which makes it a good pick for mornings.
What is actually in a soap sponge?
A soap sponge is a bar of soap built around a sponge, so you get cleansing, massaging and exfoliating in one. Each Refreshing Rhubarb Soap Sponge weighs 200g and is handmade in the UK with our 100% triple butter soap blend, loaded with mango butter, shea butter and cocoa butter for a rich, moisturising lather. It is also cruelty free.
If you want the full rundown on how they work, our guide to what a soap sponge is covers it from the beginning.
How to use it
- Wet the sponge under warm water and squeeze it a few times to work up a lather.
- Use it on your skin as you would a flannel and bar of soap together. The sponge gives a gentle massaging and exfoliating action.
- Rinse your skin thoroughly, then rinse the sponge well.
- Squeeze out the excess water and leave it somewhere that it can drain and dry between uses.
That last step matters more than it sounds. A soap sponge left sitting in a puddle of water will wear down much faster than one that dries out properly. A draining soap dish or a hook works well. Looked after sensibly, one sponge lasts for up to 30 uses.
Who is it for?
Refreshing Rhubarb works well if you:
- Like fruity scents but find berry and tropical options a bit predictable.
- Want something that feels uplifting first thing in the morning.
- Enjoy a richer, more moisturising lather than a basic bar can give you.
- Are looking for a small, low-cost gift that is a bit different. At the price, it is an easy extra for a stocking, birthday or thank-you.
It is a genuinely unisex scent. There is nothing flowery or overly sweet about it, so it tends to suit anyone who likes a fresh, fruity smell.
The honest trade-offs
No product suits everyone, so here is the fair version.
- It is a fragrance-led product. If you are sensitive to fragrance or have skin that reacts easily, a heavily scented soap may not be right for you. Check the product details and patch test if in doubt, and stop using it if you notice any irritation.
- Rhubarb is a distinctive note. If you want something soft and powdery, or a classic fresh linen smell, you may prefer a different scent from our soap sponge range.
- It needs to dry between uses. Leave it wet and it will not last as long as it should.
- The scent is for the shower, not your wardrobe. A soap sponge leaves skin lightly fresh, but it is not a substitute for a perfume.
Making the scent last
Want to carry the fruity theme through the day? Pair your shower with a light body spray or an eau de parfum in a similar family. If you prefer your fragrance to feel layered rather than competing, our guide to how to layer fragrances will help you avoid clashes. Fruity-and-fresh shower scents generally sit nicely with clean, light perfumes and less well with heavy oud or dark gourmand ones.
Price and where to find it
The Refreshing Rhubarb Soap Sponge is priced at £6.99. For a handmade product that gives up to 30 uses, that is a fraction of the price you would pay for many fragranced bath and body treats on the high street, and it is made with care by hand in the UK.

Final thoughts
Refreshing Rhubarb is the soap sponge for people who want their shower to feel like a small treat rather than a chore. It is tangy, sweet, nostalgic and refreshingly different. Give it a go, keep it dry between uses, and you will have a fruity little ritual that lasts around a month of regular showers.
