Walk into any home fragrance aisle and you will be faced with the same decision every time: wax melts, reed diffusers, room sprays, or candles? Most people end up buying whatever is nearest the till and hoping for the best. It does not have to be a guessing game. Each of these formats works in a completely different way, and once you understand the mechanics, choosing the right one for each room in your home becomes easy.
We make all four formats here at Elements of Fragrance, handmade in Glossop, so we do not have a horse in this race. Here is our honest breakdown of how each one performs, where it shines, and where it falls short.
Wax Melts: Big Fragrance, Room by Room Control
Wax melts are small blocks of scented wax that you break apart and place in a burner, using either a tealight or an electric warmer to gently heat the wax and release fragrance into the air. Because the wax only releases scent once it is warmed, you get precise control over which rooms are fragranced and when.
Best for: living rooms, bedrooms, and any space where you want a strong, room-filling scent that you can switch on and off as needed. They are also the most affordable way to try a new fragrance, so if you are torn between two scents, melts are the low-risk option.
The trade-off: you need a burner and a heat source, and once you blow out a tealight or switch off the warmer, the fragrance fades within an hour or two. They also need supervision while lit, so they are not ideal for rooms where you might forget them, or homes with pets and small children who could knock a burner over.
Our wax melts are made from 100% natural soy wax and blended with a strong fragrance concentration, so a little goes a long way. A 50g melt typically gives you 8 to 10 hours of scent throw across several uses.
Reed Diffusers: Set It and Forget It
Reed diffusers use natural rattan reeds standing in a bottle of scented oil. The reeds draw the fragrance up through capillary action and release it continuously into the air, no flame or electricity required.
Best for: hallways, bathrooms, and rooms where you want a constant, subtle background scent without lifting a finger. They are the safest option in the whole line-up, since there is no naked flame and no burner to switch off, which makes them a good match for a nursery or a rented flat where you cannot leave anything running.
The trade-off: reed diffusers are gentler than a hot wax melt or a candle, so if you want a scent to fill a large open-plan space, they may not have the throw you are after. You will also need to flip the reeds every few days to refresh the scent, and the fragrance will naturally fade over 8 to 10 weeks as the oil is used up.

Room Sprays: Instant Fragrance on Demand
Room sprays are exactly what they sound like: a quick-mist spray that delivers an instant, powerful burst of fragrance the moment you need it.
Best for: covering odours fast, freshening a room before guests arrive, or fragrance you only want occasionally rather than as a constant presence, such as a downstairs toilet or a car.
The trade-off: the fragrance is the shortest-lived of all four formats, usually fading within 20 to 30 minutes, so you will need to reapply regularly if you want continuous scent. They are brilliant as a top-up to another format, but less practical as your only source of home fragrance.

What About Candles?
Candles sit somewhere between wax melts and reed diffusers. Like a melt, a lit candle needs heat to release fragrance and needs supervising while burning, so the same safety considerations apply. Unlike a melt, you get the added ambience of a real flame, which makes candles a natural choice for evenings, baths, or anywhere you want atmosphere as well as scent. Our Honest Recommendation: Do Not Pick Just One
If we are being straight with you, the real answer is not to choose a single format for your whole home. Use a reed diffuser in the hallway for a constant, welcoming scent as people walk in. Keep a wax melt burner going in the living room in the evening for a stronger, more immersive fragrance. Keep a room spray under the sink for instant top-ups where you need them most. That way each room gets the format that actually suits how you use it, rather than forcing one product to do a job it was never designed for.
One Scent, Every Format
