What Does "Inspired By" Actually Mean? A Guide to Alternative Fragrances

If you have spent any time browsing perfume online, you will have seen the phrase everywhere: inspired by. Inspired by a famous gold bar fragrance. Inspired by an iconic amber-saffron scent. Inspired by the fragrance every office seems to be wearing this year. But what does that phrase actually mean, and how is it different from simply copying a perfume?

It is a fair question, and one we think deserves a straight answer rather than marketing spin.

The Simple Definition

An inspired-by fragrance is a new perfume formulated to evoke the character, mood and main notes of a well-known designer scent, without being sold, labelled or marketed as that original product. A perfumer studies the original, works out its main accords, the top, heart and base notes, and builds a new blend designed to sit close to that same profile.

It is fundamentally an act of interpretation, not reproduction. Nobody outside the original brand's own laboratory has access to its exact, legally protected formula, so no independent perfumer can create a molecule-for-molecule copy even if they wanted to. What they can do, and what the better producers in this space do well, is capture the character closely enough that most people cannot tell the difference in normal wear.

How Is This Different From Counterfeiting?

This distinction matters a lot, both legally and ethically. A counterfeit product uses another brand's actual name, logo and packaging to deceive a buyer into thinking they are purchasing the genuine designer item. That is illegal and, frankly, a bad experience for the customer, since counterfeit perfume is often poorly made and sometimes genuinely unsafe.

An inspired-by fragrance is a completely different thing. It has its own name, its own branding, and is openly sold as an alternative rather than the real thing. Nobody buying an inspired-by fragrance is under any illusion about what they are getting, which is exactly why honest, upfront brands in this space avoid vague or misleading language and simply say what the product is.

Why the Phrase Matters More Than People Realise

Not every inspired-by fragrance is created equal, and the phrase alone does not guarantee quality. The category has a wide range: some producers formulate carefully at proper concentration, using genuinely good fragrance oils, while others cut every possible corner and put out a synthetic-smelling spray that fades within the hour and gives the whole category a poor reputation.

This is why understanding what inspired by actually means matters. It tells you the fragrance is legally and ethically distinct from the original, but it tells you nothing about quality on its own. That comes down to formulation strength, ingredient quality and the reputation of the specific brand you are buying from.

What to Look For in a Good Inspired-By Fragrance

• Check the concentration. Eau de Parfum formulated at maximum fragrance inclusion will always outperform a diluted version, regardless of the label.
• Look for transparency. Brands that clearly state a fragrance is inspired by a well-known scent, rather than implying it is something else entirely, tend to also care more about the product itself.
• Read the return policy. A brand confident in its own quality will offer a genuine money-back guarantee.
• Favour smaller-batch, hands-on production over anonymous mass manufacturing, which correlates strongly with better quality control.
