What Is a Soap Sponge? How They Work, How to Use One and How to Make It Last
Share
If you have seen soap sponges popping up on social media or in gift shops and wondered what all the fuss is about, you are not alone. They look like a bright, chunky sponge, but there is a lot more going on inside. Here is our honest guide to what they are, how to use them and how to get the most from every one.
So what exactly is a soap sponge?
A soap sponge is exactly what it sounds like: a sponge with soap built into it. The soap is poured into and around the sponge, so the two become one. When you wet it and squeeze it, the soap releases into the sponge and gives you a rich, foamy lather straight away. No separate shower gel, no separate scrubber. Just one product that cleanses, massages and exfoliates at the same time.
What makes ours different
All soap sponges are not made equal. Ours are made by hand in the UK, and each 200g soap sponge uses our 100% triple butter soap blend, loaded with:
- Mango butter for softness
- Shea butter for rich moisture
- Cocoa butter for a creamy, nourishing lather
That combination gives a lather that feels luxurious rather than squeaky. Each one is cruelty free and lasts for up to 30 uses, depending on how you use and store it. Most are £6.99, and we also offer a Build Your Soap Sponge Trio where you can choose any three scents for £20.
How to use a soap sponge
- Wet it thoroughly under warm water.
- Squeeze it a few times to work the soap into a lather.
- Massage over damp skin in circular motions. The sponge gives a gentle exfoliation, while the soap cleanses.
- Rinse your skin as normal.
- Rinse the sponge lightly and squeeze out the excess water.
There is no need to scrub hard. Let the sponge do the work. Gentle pressure is enough for a fresh, smooth feel.
How to make it last as long as possible
The biggest factor in how long a soap sponge lasts is how it is stored between uses. A soap sponge left sitting in a puddle of water will soften and wear away quickly. Follow these tips and you will get far more washes from it:
- Squeeze out excess water after every use.
- Let it dry fully between showers. A soap dish with drainage, a hanging rack or a spot out of the direct spray works well.
- Keep it out of standing water. Never leave it on the bath edge in a pool of water.
- Do not leave it under the running shower. Only wet it when you are using it.
Who are soap sponges good for?
- Anyone who loves a scented shower. Our soap sponges come in a wide range of fragrances, from sweet and fruity to fresh and masculine.
- People who want less clutter. One product replaces a shower gel and a scrubber.
- Travellers. A solid soap is easier to pack than a bottle of liquid.
- Gift buyers. They are fun, colourful and affordable, which makes them great stocking fillers, teacher gifts and thank yous.
The honest bit
Soap sponges are not for everyone. If you have very sensitive skin or a skin condition, the exfoliating action may be too much for daily use, so patch test first and use it gently, or a couple of times a week. As with any soap, avoid the eyes and stop using it if you notice any irritation.
They also need a little care. Unlike a pump bottle, a soap sponge does need to be dried properly to stay in good condition. If you are someone who leaves things wherever they land in the shower, it will not last as long as it could. And because the sponge is part of the product, it is designed to be used by one person rather than shared, which is better for hygiene anyway.
Picking a scent
Our soap sponge range has something for everyone. Sweet tooth? Try one of our candy or berry scents. Love florals? Look at our violet or pear and freesia options. Prefer fresh and clean? Our citrus and masculine scents are great for a wake-up shower. The fun part is trying a few and finding your favourite, which is exactly why our trio bundle is so popular.
Our take
A soap sponge turns a quick wash into a small, scented treat. They are practical, affordable and genuinely nice to use, as long as you give them a chance to dry between showers. Handmade in the UK by our family-run team in Glossop, they are one of our favourite little luxuries.
