There's a reason scented candles are one of the most gifted, most repurchased home items in the country — the right one changes how an entire room feels the second you strike a match.

About Scented Candles: Hot Throw, Wax Type and What Actually Matters

Not all candles are created equal, and the price tag alone doesn't tell you much. What actually matters is "hot throw" — how strongly a candle fills a room once it's lit — and "cold throw", how much scent you can smell from the unlit wax. A candle can look identical to another on the shelf and perform completely differently once you burn it, because it all comes down to how much fragrance oil is actually in the wax.

Our candles are hand-poured into a tin, which has genuine practical advantages over glass: tins are lighter, unbreakable, easy to travel with, and the metal conducts heat evenly, which helps with a cleaner, more even burn. It's a format that's become hugely popular for exactly that reason — all the fragrance performance of a premium candle, in a format that's more forgiving to live with day to day.

Our candle scent range spans everything from clean and comforting (Comfort, Air) to sweet and nostalgic (Frost Fairy, Fairy Glow) to bold fruity blends (Black Cherry, Blueberry Harvest, Beach Paradise) — so whether you want a candle that says "cosy Sunday night in" or one that fills a room the second guests walk through the door, there's one built for the job.

Why Buy Candles from Elements of Fragrance

We're inspired by the fragrances you already know and love — the designer scents you'd buy without hesitation if the price wasn't a factor. We recreate that same character and capture the essence of the original, then sell it for a fraction of the price.

Every candle we pour contains the highest fragrance concentration we can put in it — which is why our scents fill the room from the moment you strike a match, with a stronger, longer-lasting hot throw than you'd expect at this price.

Everything we sell is made by hand in Glossop, in the Peak District, by our family team. It's a genuinely British-made product, not a mass-produced import — made by people who care whether you love it.

We think it's genuinely unfair that a strong hot throw usually comes with a premium price tag. Because we cut out expensive retail packaging and big-brand mark-ups, we can afford to fill each tin with a maximum-strength fragrance load and still keep the price under £10 — proper performance without the premium price.

That's our whole USP in one sentence: cheap doesn't have to mean weak. Our candles are built to compete with names three or four times the price on scent throw alone, and we'd genuinely encourage you to compare.

How to Choose the Right Candle (and Get the Best Burn Out of It)

Pick your scent based on the room and the mood you want to create — warm, gourmand scents suit living rooms and bedrooms in the evening, while brighter, fruity scents work well in kitchens and hallways. For the strongest possible hot throw, always trim the wick to around 5mm before lighting, and let the candle burn long enough on its first light for the wax to melt fully across the surface (usually 1-2 hours) — this prevents "tunnelling", where the candle burns a narrow hole down the middle and wastes wax at the edges.

Avoid burning any candle for more than about four hours at a time, and keep it away from draughts, which can cause uneven burning and make the flame smoke. Looked after properly, a well-made candle should burn cleanly and consistently right down to the last bit of wax.

Quick tips:

  • Trim the wick to 5mm before every light for a cleaner burn.
  • Let the first burn run 1-2 hours to melt wax fully across the top and avoid tunnelling.
  • Keep away from draughts and never burn for more than 4 hours at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy a set of candles and split the cost?

Yes. There's no limit on how many candles you add to your basket — Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal Pay in 3 and Shopify Instalments all apply to your full order total, not per item.

Are your candles good for gifting?

Yes — many customers use buy now pay later to build gift bundles of two or three candles, spreading the cost while the candles are wrapped and ready to give.

Does buy now pay later affect my credit score?

Klarna and Clearpay use soft credit checks that don't appear on your credit file. PayPal's assessment can vary, and a hard search may be carried out if a payment is missed.

Is there any interest to pay?

No. All four options are completely interest-free, provided payments are made on time.

What if I need to return a candle I bought with buy now pay later?

Our normal returns policy applies. We'll notify your BNPL provider and your payment plan will be adjusted or cancelled accordingly.

Why do candles "tunnel" and how do I stop it happening?

Tunnelling happens when a candle isn't burned long enough on its first light to melt the wax evenly across the top. Let your first burn run for 1-2 hours so the melt pool reaches the edges of the tin, and it should burn evenly every time after that.

Are your candles strongly scented compared to other brands?

Yes — we deliberately fill our candles with the maximum fragrance concentration we can, so the hot throw is noticeably stronger than many candles at a similar price point.

Is a candle in a tin as good as one in a glass jar?

It performs just as well, if not better — tins conduct heat evenly for a clean burn, and they're far more practical: lighter, unbreakable, and easy to move from room to room or take away with you.
